Tips for Pool Care in Winter

Winter in Houston Texas is typically a nice mild break from the desperately hot and humid summer, spring, and fall. Houstonians are able to go out during the day without a risk of getting overheated and most enjoy a nice cold crisp day. However during the winter those with pools can easily forget to care for the pool as you are not using them. 3D Pools and Landscape hasn’t forgotten the beautiful pool we designed and built for you and your family and therefore we want to offer you just a few tips to keep your pool updated and ready for the summer of 2021!

One of the easiest things to forget or simply put off is the cleaning and chemical balance of your pool. Since you aren’t using your pool, cleaning the pool with all of the leaves that have fallen into the pool just doesn’t seem important. However, not getting leaves out of your pool can cause the water to become filled with algae and worse with bacteria that makes the water unsafe. To fix this, you would have to not only get the leaves out of the pool, but invest in chemicals to try to re-balance the water. While it may not be fun and while it takes up time, we strongly advise cleaning leaves out of the pool on a regular basis so as to prevent unnecessary expenses and work in the future. Plus, keeping your pool clean will allow you to enjoy the landscaping design that 3D Pools and Landscape designed and installed for you! This brings us to our next point, it is vital for you to consistently check the chemical balance of the pool. To continue on with the same point with the leaves, allowing the balance of the pool to go awry would be costly as you’ll need to buy more chemicals than normal to get it back to balanced. All in all, 3D Pools and Landscape suggests keep up with the normal maintenance of the pool in the winter, even if you have to work more than you do in the summer. If you do this, it will greatly pay off in the summer.

One nice thing about winter in Houston is that it rarely freezes. This allows our homes and plants to survive the winter without too much upkeep. The same goes for our pool equipment. However, when it does freeze, it is very important to be sure that all of your pool’s equipment is dry and stored away in order to avoid freezing. For example, if you use an automated pool sweeper and you leave it out of water and wet the night before it freezes, it’s piping and the sweeper itself could freeze and break. In order to avoid having to purchase all new equipment be sure to watch for the rare Houston freezes and put away your equipment when it does happen. In the event of a freeze in Houston, it is also important to keep your water filled up to the normal level to avoid having issues with your pump. Running your pump constantly during a freeze and keeping the water level high will keep moving water in your pipes and this will prevent the pipes themselves from freezing.

Lastly, the most important thing is to simply not neglect the pool since it is not in use. Keep a watchful eye on the pool can prevent major problems. Watch for Houston critters and make sure to scoop them out of the pool quickly. Keep a close eye on your pool pump, skimmers, sweepers, and any other equipment to be sure they are properly maintained. Watch your outside pool toys, furniture, and anything else around the pool that you typically use during the summer that you may not be using as much during the winter. Keeping a consistent maintenance schedule will allow you to enjoy the pool during the summer and avoid the costly repairs that come with not keeping your pool updated.
